How To Handle Stress
Whether you are 13, 25, or 70....we all have stress. Stress is not just developed through our own actions, but also the actions of others and the environmental stressors. This is why everyone and ANYONE can become stressed. In a fast paced, "more is better", and judgmental world, stress is all around us. Parents stress children, bosses stress workers, finances stress adults, and the media stresses everyone. In a world so full of stress, how do we handle it? Do we avoid it? Deny it? No! Rather, we must solve the issue. In this article I cover how to handle stress and the options you have when doing so.
Do not avoid it, Solve it
The first and foremost point I want to make in this article is that stress should be resolved, not avoided. Avoiding to deal with stress can lead to fatigue, depression, decreased motivation, and even suicide. Stress has taken us all to dark places before and the goal of this article is to help as many people as possible get out of that dark place, even turn their stress into a life changing trigger for the better. Everyone dealing with stress must realize that EVERYONE deals with stress differently. Even though I will be listing ways to handle stress, there are countless of other ways to do so. These are just options that have helped people I know and myself. Analyze the situation and decide which option is best for you.
Remove the stressor
The first and foremost option when dealing with stress is to get rid of the stressor(s). Though seen as very simple, getting rid of your everyday stressor(s) can be one of the most difficult things you ever do. In order to remove a stressor, you must first realize what/who the stressor is. Many of people get in this rut of trying to overcome being stressed out, but they do not know what they are trying to fix in order to overcome that stress. After you determine what exactly you are trying to remove, then you can get to actually removing it. In order to remove a stressor you must either change the stressors actions upon you, change you actions towards the stressor, or stop interactions among yourself and the given stressor. Sometimes seeking help from others is needed in order to get rid of a stressor. Never be afraid or ashamed to seek help. Battling stress is a battle won with numbers, not with fighting alone.
Productive Stress Relief
Yes, PRODUCTIVE STRESS RELIEF. The second option for handling stress is to find a productive stress relieving outlet. There are countless ways to release your frustrations, stress, and emotions....but that does not mean they are all positive ways of doing so. During times of "coping with stress" many people turn to self harm, drugs, abusing their partners or others, and other negative forms of stress relief. When relieving stress, focus on forms of "coping" that will deem beneficial in the long term. Stress relieving hobbies such as (but not limited to) weight lifting/running, drawing/painting, singing, and cooking can results in skill mastery and even a future profession. Use your stress as a trigger to learn a skill, change your habits, and even change your life!
Change Your Reaction
The last and most important option for handling stress is changing your perception. Face it, majority of life is reaction....not action. Though we place actions on the world, it's other's reactions that makes a difference in the world. This is just like how you feel, act, and believe is based on your reaction towards the environment your life revolves around. Life is about reaction. These stressors place a stimulus on you and you allow their actions to become a stressor. We as humans allow actions to become stress due to our reaction to stimulus. As these stressors place a stimulus on us, we can react against it or react with it. When we react against it we learn to resolve our problem, or even face them head on. When we react with a stimulus, you allow it to take over and overcome you. Instead of reacting with a stimulus, learn to react against it. Don't react with the stimulus....let the stimulus react with you. Whether that be facing a bully, leaving an abusive partner, or quitting an overly stressful job. Let the stimulus/stressor adapt to you, BECAUSE YOU ARE IN CONTROL. You can never controls the actions of others in the world around you, but you can control how you react to every single one of them.
Stress is everywhere and everyone gets consumed by stress in some point in their life. Though being stressed is inevitable, having to stay stressed and let it consume you is not! Instead of trying to avoid resolving the stress, you should resolve and remove stress from your life. There are various ways to handle stress. When handling stress you can either remove the stressor, find a form of stress relief, or change your reaction to the stimuli/stressors around you. Stress kills and I think it's time we turn the table and get rid of stress!
